How Does the Accreditation System for Higher Education Institutions in Serbia Work?

The quality, reliability, and development of higher education largely depend on clearly defined standards and their consistent implementation. For this reason, accreditation and quality assurance procedures play a crucial role in evaluating the performance of higher education institutions and study programmes in the Republic of Serbia.

The functioning of the accreditation system, the criteria applied, and the procedures used to verify compliance with the prescribed requirements were discussed by Prof. Dr Stefan Milojević, Assistant Director of the National Entity for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education (NEAQA), during an appearance on Jutro je, a programme broadcast by RTS Radio Belgrade.

The discussion addressed the accreditation procedures for higher education institutions and study programmes, the role of review panels, quality standards, and periodic evaluations conducted to determine whether institutions continue to meet the requirements necessary for the provision of higher education.

Particular attention was devoted to the specific aspects assessed during the accreditation process, the frequency with which higher education institutions are evaluated, and the measures that may be taken if an institution or study programme is found to no longer comply with the prescribed standards and requirements.

Accreditation is not merely an administrative procedure; it is an important mechanism for safeguarding the quality of higher education, protecting students’ interests, and strengthening public confidence in the higher education system. Through continuous monitoring, evaluation, and enhancement of quality, the system promotes institutional accountability and helps create the conditions necessary for the development of modern, relevant, and reliable higher education.

The interview was conducted by Nada Babić.
